Welcome, new students!

Hi, this is Sam, your instructor for Physics 6A at UCSC for the fall quarter of 2009.

This is the blog site for this course. As you can see I used this site last year, and I intend to continue using it this year as well for similar purposes -- announcements and homework/quiz discussions. This is the first posting for this year's course.

Some early birds are already inquiring about the textbook, and that is excellent! You can't start reading too early.

The textbook is:
Essential University Physics, Richard Wolfson [Chapters 1-14; Vol. 1] (Pearson, Addison Wesley)

Also, note that this course will use the on-line homework system called "MasteringPhysics". It is my understanding that a seat for MasteringPhysics can be purchased with the book or separately. If you like, you can buy a seat for MasteringPhysics already, but please DO NOT start using MasteringPhysics for this course yet. (You do not need to. In fact, I think you will not be able to use MasteringPhysics yet. However, if for some weird reason you can, then that probably means that you are wasting your credit in a wrong on-line course, since I have not set up my MasteringPhysics on-line course yet. I will let you know when I set up my on-line MasteringPhysics course. ONLY THEN, you can/should start using your MasteringPhysics.)

The website address for this course is http://griffin.ucsc.edu/teaching/09Q4-6A. You probably want to bookmark this address, as it will be updated as the quarter approaches, and as we go along during the quarter. Right now, it simply points back to this blog site.

I don't have the syllabus yet, but it is going to be quite similar to the last year's. For that, you can visit the last year's web site here.

Looking forward to another great quarter of interacting with you all for learning all that great Physics stuff!

Best wishes, Sam
